Flooring Waste Factor Guide

Learn how much extra flooring to order for simple rooms, closets, diagonal layouts, and patterned material.

Waste covers cuts and layout mistakes

Flooring waste is extra material for cuts, damaged pieces, pattern matching, and layout adjustments. Without it, a project can stall near the end when matching material is hard to find.

Simple rooms need less, complex rooms need more

A plain rectangular room may only need 5% to 10% waste. Hallways, closets, angled walls, stairs, and diagonal layouts can push that higher.

Order quantity is different from installed area

Material cost is usually based on the waste-adjusted quantity you buy. Labor is often based on the actual installed square footage, so keep those numbers separate.
